US-Serien:
Schlechte Zeiten für Englisch

Wir sind ja alle Serienjunkies usw., aber nach dem Hype kommen jetzt auch langsam die Bedenklichkeiten. Zum Beispiel, was die Sprache angeht, die so in den Writers’ Rooms produziert wird. Wer nur ein paar Serien gesehen hat, der hat damit automatisch massenhaft Sätze gehört wie (frei aus dem Gedächtnis zitiert):
- »You guys seen the game last night?«
- »Just five minutes, I promise!«
- »Is this some kind of joke to you?«
- »Trust me, I know what I’m doing.«
- »I love you, I really do, but …«
- »I guess you’re gonna have to trust me on this.«
- »You should go talk to her.«
- »You know, we’re not so different, you and I.«
- »If he wants a war, it is war he’ll get.«
- »I got your back on this.«
- »Call me.«
- (Bei nächtlichem Anruf:) »You have any idea what time it is?«
- »I’m not even gonna dignify this with an answer!«
- »You know, we should have done that more often.«
- »Come on, it’s the least I can do.«
- »What is it with this guy!«
- »What was that all about?«
- »Look, we’re both under a lot of stress right now.«
- »It’s a date!«
- »What are we doing?«
Usw.! Das sind alles eben keine Catchphrases, sondern (mal mehr, mal weniger) Versatzstücke aus dem Baukasten des sogenannten Creative Writing. Die einfachstmöglichen Textabbilder von Plotpoints, Twists usw. Die These geht dann so: Je weniger eine Serie davon hat, desto besser ist sie. (Sofortiges Gegenbeispiel natürlich: »24« ist trotz oder wegen des ständigen Floskelarmageddons so spitze.)
Zusammen mit @heylindahey und Katana habe ich (vor allem letztes Jahr) mal ein paar Sachen mitgeschrieben, es folgen also ein paar konkrete Beispiele, aus irgendwelchen Gründen vor allem aus der schlimmen letzten »Dexter«-Staffel. Das Ganze funktioniert aber ebenso mit fast allen anderen Serien. Grad zum Beispiel gesehen, »Supernatural« 10×06, könnte man eigentlich hier komplett mit reinstellen. Highlight: »Trust you?! We don’t even know you!«
Die Floskellisten sind auch in keiner Weise vollständig, sondern jeweils nur eine Auswahl aus der jeweiligen Folge:

- »It’s time to step up our game.«

Soweit mal unsere kleine Phänomenologie des Sprachmaterials von US-Qualitätsserien. Wahrscheinlich kann man von zwei Extremen sprechen, einerseits den sprachbewussten Serien (wie den »Simpsons«) und andererseits den rein plotgetriebenen Serien. Sprachlich sind dann alle Serien irgendwo dazwischen anzusiedeln. Das könnte man mal irgendwann anhand der Untertiteldateien nachprüfen, etwa die vocabulary richness untersuchen, ähnlich wie das neulich jemand mit den Lyrics auf Rap Genius gemacht hat.
Ein guter Einwand unterwegs war übrigens der hier, und die Credits gehen an @heylindahey: »Wir sollten aufpassen, dass wir nicht alles als Floskeln bzw. lame narrative devices verstehen. Sonst fällt uns noch auf, dass das ganze Leben eine Floskel ist (didn’t you know already?).«

Wahrscheinlich ist hier das erste Mal dokumentiert, dass jemand „Arrow“ als Qualitätserie bezeichnet oder versteht. Dass die Dialoge in diesem Produkt ausnehmend einfältig seien, entspricht ungefähr der Klage, Marmite wäre einfach zu salzig. (Wer übrigens glaubt, dass das endemische Schwäche der Superhelden-Materie sein müsse, sieht sich mit „Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.“ eines besseren belehrt, das auch sein Scherflein an Floskeln beiträgt, aber seinen Figuren eben auch immer wieder echte Schlagfertigkeit zugesteht. Was es noch nicht zur Qualitätsserie macht.)

Aha, Sorkin-Serien fehlen bei einem Eintrag zur einfallslosen Floskelhaftigkeit des Fernseh-Englischen der Gegenwart? So wie, sagen wir mal, Thomas Mann in einer Liste von „Gegenwartsautor_innen, die nur in einem pseudo-verbalen Plauderton schreiben können“ fehlt? You think?

Diese Antwort unterstreicht ja auch genau das aktuelle Problem von Aaron Sorkin – seit The West Wing hat er im Serienformat keine überzeugenden Dialoge mehr auf die Beine bekommen; höchstens noch für Zuschauer, die Max Goldt mal so treffend als „Dr. Lieschen Müller“ beschrieben hat.
